Here are some suggestions for successful reading of a newspaper article:

  • Read the article twice.
  • The first time, read the article all the way through once in order to understand the main point. After reading it, you should be able to restate the main idea in your own words.
  • The second time you read the article, take your time and write down notes. You should write directly on the article/or make comments in the word, as well as on a piece of paper or computer.
    • Suggestions:
      • Identify the main point of the article. Here are some hints:
        • oHighlight the headline and subheadings; these will give you a clear overview of the purpose of the article.
        • oHighlight the first paragraph or twoand read them closely. Along with the headline, they provide an overview and preview of the article.
        • Find the sub points of the article. Look carefully at the organization of the article. What are the 3-4 sub points that the author is using to support the main idea?
          • oHighlight a circle around each sub point (no need to highlight every word). We will work on how to do this in class. You may wish to number each sub point that you plan to include in your summary.
        • Circle the words you do not know and look them up in the dictionary.
